<<Along the lines of deciding which actions a company will take based on the bottom line to maximize profits.>>

Sounds like a problem I had with Sears and my refrigerator. I lost my freezing capacity. When I called the repariman, he says that they knew of the problem; but only fixed it (under warranty)if they were called (vs general recall fix). Luckily I had a stand-up freezer so I did not lose any frozen items.

Point being, many companies may have an internet fix; but they may only implement them (with cost recovery in mind) if they're called or an inquiry is made.

I think that in NA the bulk of the Y2K problems will happen in the small to medium businesses (a lot of whom supply the big businnes that are "compliant"). But I don't think that there will be any large scale chaos from Y2K related problems.

But lets not talk about overseas. i.e. Japan, Europe, Aussie, Africa, South America, Russia etc. Local chaos will probably suggest that maybe some gold in the portfolio may not hurt, after all you can sell it to GS or the Comex or the CB as they beat the bushes for hard assets once the squeeze play hits! Gold (& P) as a cure for cancer as we saw earlier? Gold compounds are presently used a treatment for Arthrithis.
