hi all,

earthlink looks like a nice isp to go along with aol for gte (fujitsu/orct) adsl... can't hurt demand moving forward... kinda like the part about the 500 dsl-ready COs and the gte plans for expanding heavily over the next year...

sorta interesting that this is semi-sprint related, but probably not worth reading too much into that angle..

Company Press Release

EarthLink Taps GTE Internetworking For National DSL Network
Services

Agreement Gives EarthLink One of the Largest Nationwide Coverage Areas for DSL
Services

PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 23, 1999--EarthLink (NASDAQ:ELNK - news) continued its drive to provide high-speed Internet access through digital subscriber line (DSL) technology, announcing an agreement today with GTE Internetworking for national DSL network services.

The arrangement augments EarthLink's previously announced DSL coverage with a second major national provider, increasing EarthLink Sprint DSL service's coverage area across the nation. In July, EarthLink announced the industry's first nationwide DSL service.

EarthLink plans to offer the entry-level GTE-based service in the $50-per-month range. GTE currently has more than 500 DSL-ready central offices (COs) in its own territories and plans to expand heavily throughout the rest of the nation over the next year. The companies have performed preliminary data tests since early this year, and plan trials in Los Angeles during this quarter. Commercial launch is planned in 20 other markets during the fourth quarter of this
year.

''Our members already rely heavily on EarthLink's fast and reliable dial-up connections, so as a national ISP it's also important for us to be able to offer DSL and other high-speed services when our members are ready to upgrade,'' said Jon Irwin, senior vice president of broadband services at EarthLink.

''Our members are very active Internet users -- they each average about 42 hours online per month. We're seeing a lot more demand for broadband services as more and more EarthLink members learn how much more they can get out of the 'Net with a fast connection.''

The agreement with GTE propels EarthLink further ahead of both ISPs and regionally focused DSL providers that are scrambling to offer consumer DSL services. EarthLink was the first nationwide ISP to outsource dial-up network services, and it has successfully adopted the same philosophy in rolling out its broadband services.

By tapping both GTE's and UUNET's national DSL networks -- as well as the DSL networks of Sprint and Pacific Bell -- EarthLink will offer service to millions of homes across the country through thousands of local COs. It also allows EarthLink to roll its DSL service out more quickly than other ISPs or DSL providers that can only offer regional coverage.

EarthLink also has leveraged the trusted EarthLink Sprint brand as the company steadily expands into broadband. Although EarthLink is using multiple network vendors to deliver DSL, the service will be marketed to the public as EarthLink Sprint DSL. Potential members will call EarthLink to sign up for the service, coordinate installation and receive support after they're up and running, regardless of the network vendor EarthLink uses to deploy it.
