C Kahn, let's keep the other thing for another time.
The point of that film was to demonstrate how frighteningly consistent a social cover up can be. What is told, passed on, to your kids, how it is done and what is not said depends very strongly on your contemporary interest.
I would not have mentioned the film if not Neocon had told me once he knew it, so I thought it might by chance have crossed your way too. In Germany it made quite an impression, especially as it mixed comedy into those grave discussions. A little step in the direction of 'Life is Beautiful'.

My thought is that a number of skeletons in a closet often can introduce strong strains in families - even in the second or third generation. Hurting their children is normally not exactly what people want to do; however, you can not always afford to tell your kids the truth, they might pass it on. So you will seem repentent, even if you are not. It will lead to an ever-growing cage of lies and hypocrisy. Your neighbors are in the same situation, and eventually their lies and your lies will intertwine and make a massive case of social cover-up.

Shame for having a Nazi in the family is not the typical reaction. Normally there are others to blame, or more to blame. Hiding the Nazis of your family is typical, however, and finding others who were the <real> thugs, who were to blame for what your father did.

And the sins of their fathers will stay with the kids.

Self-righteousness is maybe the strongest feature of the typical German character.

However, I think that Germany has many faces (and many colors) and actually has good chances of overcoming the past, especially by losing those features that are thought to be so typical.

Regards MNI.

PS: I had heard of truedog and had sent a message before you posted me. However I was late and figure I didn't reach him before his departure to the hospital.
