Redback SMS Enables Advanced TelCom Group to Offer Integrated High-Speed Data And IP Servicesbiz.yahoo.com SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 24, 1999-- Redback Networks, Inc., (Nasdaq:RBAK - news) announced today that Advanced TelCom Group Inc. (ATG) is deploying Redback Subscriber Management Systems(tm) (SMSs) to bring Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) services to its local and long-distance telephone customers and to implement value-added IP services such as VPNs and telecommuter applications. Using Redback SMSs in each active region, ATG is building a ubiquitous network with a single operational model to offer a variety of data and voice services to businesses in the tier-three and tier-four cities it serves. Redback's SMS enables ATG to roll out DSL immediately and add other broadband services in the future, as it expands from the Northwest into over one hundred U.S. cities during the next five years. ``We needed a solution that would allow us to offer data over any transport technology while maintaining a unified provisioning, authentication, and value-added services model,' said Chris Ward, vice president of Internet Services at ATG. ``Redback has the very box we've been waiting for -- it's a wonderful product that has the scalability, reliability, and service selection capabilities that enable us to deliver our signature quality customer service.' ``With a Class 5 switch and a Redback Subscriber Management System in each regional hub, ATG is equipped to offer the kinds of innovative data and integrated voice services that will differentiate it from competitors,' said Mark Weiner, director of marketing at Redback. ``Whether it's offering a choice of high-speed connections, with DSL delivering co-located multi-media content, or securing VPNs and telecommuting services, Redback's solution provides a flexible, reliable platform for delivering and monitoring value-added services.' In addition to using the SMS to connect thousands of simultaneous high-speed subscribers, ATG will leverage the SMS's multiple-context functionality to implement its value-added IP service offerings. A context is a virtual machine within the SMS that provides a separate administrative domain for security, accounting, and management of a high-speed access network. Each context contains a unique routing entity, independent address spaces and forwarding tables, and multiple RADIUS clients to allow complete and secure data partitioning. Using the multiple context functionality, ATG can configure subscribers to access multiple services across the same physical link, either simultaneously or independently. For example, a telecommuter can activate a particular service, such as connection to the Internet or connection to a corporate network, by using a specific authentication identifier when logging on. ATG can manage both accounts through the same RADIUS database. Multiple contexts also allow ATG to designate particular contexts within the SMS for each wholesale customer, ensuring security and proper delivery of data traffic to the downstream service provider.
