Summary. Put the symbols <i> at the start and </i> at the end.

And you, you have some control of the width if you choose the "stretch to fit" option. I use that because I prefer a shorter line length than they provide and can get it by narrowing my window to the 700 pixel width which is the narrowest the SI window will go without generating a horizontal scroll bar.
