I think that Hughes DTV will only solve part of the problem for AOL, i.e. there is only that much you can expect from satellite mobile access.

It is my belief that AOL is going after being THE handheld wireless operating system of choice.

The news was of Sun developing a Java based web browser that can run on virtually any Java capable appliance. With only a 280k footprint (compared to at least 5000k for Microsoft and Netscape's versions) this new piece of software can fit on virtually any appliance. That means that everything from set-top boxes to cell phones may soon run Sun's new browser.

Why is this significant for the online access gorilla? America Online is positioning itself to port its software to HTML, that was a primary reason for the Netscape acquisition. After they change their software over to the universal standard it will most likely be able to run anywhere, not just PCs and Macintosh. The only problem right now is that there is no viable market outside of personal computers.

That's why America Online is pushing high speed access methods including cable and faster telephone access. They want set-top boxes, not for the better speed, but for the millions of new customers it will bring to the net. If AOL captures only 25-50% of these new customer it will be a boon!

Then there is the whole "information appliance" market that Cisco, Sun, and Intel to an extent are pushing. These devices perform specific functions such as e-mail or web browsing without a PC. To this point the major problem with these devices was the inability to load a reliable web browser. Sun just delivered that. Add that browser to these devices and AOL just found millions of more devices to give access to.
