Fibernet to Increase TANet Capacity 40 Fold With Deployment of CIENA DWDM Systems August 24, 1999 LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE) via NewsEdge Corporation -- CIENA Corporation (Nasdaq: CIEN) and Fibernet (LSE: FIB), the high-speed data networking specialist, today announced the deployment of CIENA's dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical transport equipment in Fibernet's TANet UK nationwide fiber optic backbone network. The deployment of CIENA's MultiWave Sentry(TM) 4000 will both increase the capacity of the TANet network by 40 times and facilitate the introduction of innovative new services. The initial roll out of CIENA's equipment is due to be completed in the fourth quarter, with TANet's first customers expected to go live in a similar timescale. "CIENA's MultiWave Sentry will increase the base capacity of our network to 100 Gigabits, enabling the continued rapid creation of secure, high-bandwidth managed network services for corporate, carrier and ISP customers," said Charles McGregor, chief executive of Fibernet Group plc. "Our busiest routes on the TANet network are filling quickly, and with DWDM we are responding to customer demand by significantly increasing bandwidth availability," continued McGregor. "The ease with which CIENA equipment expands our capacity enables us to pass the benefits on to our customers by being even more competitive with our charges. This, in conjunction with our co-location facilities at over 40 Points of Presence, enables us to offer individual clients a complete ready-made TANet network in very short timescales at a very competitive price. It's ideal for international telcos and ISPs wanting to establish a position in the UK." The implementation of CIENA's DWDM equipment will effectively create 40 virtual TANet national networks, each operating at 2.5 Gbps. This not only enables Fibernet to offer customers who require immediate access to the UK market an "instant" national network, but it also increases bandwidth for existing customers. Fibernet's Flexible Service Architecture enables the direct implementation of SDH, ATM and IP services on the DWDM core. "Liberalisation of telecommunications in Europe enables new operators to react quickly to customer demands," said Guy Powell, vice president and general manager of CIENA Europe. "Fibernet is proving that CIENA's optical transport turns fiber from a necessary expense to a revenue-generating asset and delivers an immediate solution for network service providers and their customers." CIENA's MultiWave Sentry 4000 will be installed throughout the 3,000 km TANet network, which links 43 Points of Presence (PoPs) in the UK.
