In a separate announcement, Hackensack, New Jersey-based Net2Phone also said it named former Bloomberg New Media general manager Jonathan Fram as president of the newly public company.

NTOP continued to climb early as the company emerged from its mandatory post-IPO quiet period. Shares jumped 6.4375 to 53.562 on the Nasdaq market on volume of more than 3.9 million shares.

Under the Compaq agreement, a button located on the Presario keyboard will connect Internet users to a telephony services Web site. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The so-called "Community Center" button initially connects Presario customers to a Compaq and Net2Phone joint site that features free computer-to-telephone software, along with download instructions and details about Net2Phone's rates.

After downloading the software and setting up an account, users can launch the application and connect via the Web to a telephone anywhere in the world.

Compaq, the world's largest computer maker, is currently shipping Presario keyboards with this capability to customers in Canada, Latin America, Japan, and Asia-Pacific, where Net2Phone has country-specific Web sites available in each market.

As Net2Phone's president, Fram will oversee the expansion of Net2Phone's Internet telephony business, broaden the firm's distribution agreements, and develop strategic relationships with Internet service providers and communications companies.

Fram was formerly general manager of New Media at Bloomberg, a global financial news and information company, where he oversaw that company's Internet strategy.

Before Bloomberg, Fram was chief executive at Institutional Research Network, the professional arm of the Financial News Network.
