However, they do state the enormity of Y2K issues facing the oil industry, which could quickly negate today's surplus production. For example, a single offshore platform can contain 10,000 embedded controllers microchips used to control pressure, temperature and flow all of which need checking and half of which are critical to its operation.

Let's bear in mind that the Strategic Petroleum Reserve stands ready to augment our oil supply should serious crude oil supplies be disrupted.

Because of this, I have never really worried about the production platforms as even a 6 month disruption of 1/2 our imports could be replaced for up to 6-9 months before exhausting it.

The worry I "DO" have is with refineries. I want more evidence that refinery production won't be seriously disrupted. The "Wired" article went quite a ways to alleviating that concern, but not completely.

StatsCan's Y2K report called 'unbelievable'

Cipher Systems president scoffs at findings that most large firms will have fix in place.

Cripes, when you read info like the bolded section above it makes you wonder just how big these guys are, where they fit in to the supply line and more importantly are you holding their stock? <ggg>
