here is a good tid bit on phcm PHCM -- Bus Sftwre & Svcs -- Technology 24-Aug-99 12:12:37 Shares of Phone.com surged 13%, or $16 7/16, to $141 7/8 on volume of 839,000 shares. Earlier in the day Phone.com established a new high of $144 3/8. The stock is up a whopping 787% from its IPO price of $16 on June 11. Not surprisingly, trading data shows that speculative investors, mainly retail but also some professional day traders, dominate Phone.com's activity. A review of the firm's recent volume shows there have been no blocks traded today, which is not unusual for the stock. The limited pre-trade data available on I-Watch shows institutional brokers looking to sell into the rise. While typically, super messages are indicative of an underlying order from an institutional client , the outstanding gains seen in this stock over the past few days make it quite feasible there is a market maker willing to sell large chunks of its inventory at these prices. The low level of institutional activity, and the strong trading related to day trading make Phone.com highly susceptible to above average volatility.
