Primary gold production hit a record last year, and will be very close this year. Mine closing isn't having a major impact, yet. The largest firms are actually increasing production in a effort to get unit cost down in response to lower prices. It spreads those fixed costs over more ounces, hence a lower cost per ounce. Mines like Barrick's Pierina in Peru are ramping from start-up in November 1998 to 835,000 ounces at a cash cost of $45/oz.
