Most people are "clueless" when it comes to what is involved with buying/selling real estate. A good broker can save you thousands of dollars in potential hidden costs, or "hassles" in accepting a contract that has too many possible problems. You get what you pay for!

I think real estate is one industry that people feel cheated by. There was a discussion on this matter regarding HOMS
on another thread. The problem is that in some parts of the country housing prices have ballooned and real estate
agents still get 6%, which is way too much on a 500K house when the mkt is red hot. Out here we had a situation a
few years ago where housing prices were really hammered, (down 40% or so) and the papers didn't really report it.
The headlines in the home section only dwelled on pricing when prices were going up. So it was hard to get a read on
the market... I believe the real estate industry (which pays for heaving advertising in the local papers) was responsible
for this selective reporting. Its just an industry that attracts a lot of questionable people out here. fwiw

Michelle,

Real estate is a lot different here. Many realtors have difficulty making a decent living in this area. There is no housing shortage nor skyrocketing pricing except for land where retail business is booming. That is about four square miles around here. The skyroketing prices for the retail properties is still tame compared to where you live.

My point is the realator has an agreement to receive 6% or likely split that amount with another realtor if she sells the land for me. I did not want to be bothered selling it myself. She pays for the advertsing, etc. I am certain she is entitled to her percentage for the service she provides.

I doubt the Dentist fills cavities for free. I know he does not. He provides services on teeth for which he expects to be paid. My point is one is entitled to the fee that is agreed upon for service.

I have nor more interest in giving up the 6% than the Dentist. The difference is I believe I owe it for the service. My contract with the realator expires soon so bypassing her would be easy.

I believe the difference in the way real estate is priced here compared to other parts of the country is huge. The average house around here sells for $50K I believe.

I just like to do what is fair and right. I feel better about myself even though I may be less financially wealthy for it.
