FWIW The Nasdaq National Market's short-interest ratio eased to 2.10 days from 2.17 in the previous month. The short-interest ratio for the smaller stocks rose to 1.13 days from 1.09 days. The ratio is the number of trading days that would be required to close out the short positions through share purchases and is considered a measure of trading sentiment.

The following companies had the largest volume decreases in short sales outstanding: Microsoft Corp. fell 7,393,196 shares to 24,822,851 shares; Echostar Communications Corp. Class A fell 4,360,896 shares to 2,391,518 shares; Exodus Communications Inc. fell 3,444,901 shares to 5,254,697 shares; Cisco Systems Inc. fell 2,235,365 shares to 33,079,054 shares; and L. L. Knickerbocker Co. fell 3,139,234 shares to 404,666 shares.

The following companies had the largest volume increases in short sales outstanding: Compuware Corp. rose 4,218,138 shares to 7,930,578 shares; Amkor Technology Inc. rose 3,237,239 shares to 8,380,184 shares; Voicestream Wireless Corp. rose 2,909,202 shares to 9,213,624 shares; Global Crossing Ltd. rose 2,874,668 shares to 11,631,568 shares; and Regions Financial Corp. rose 2,858,126 shares to 3,726,165 shares.

Among companies with the largest short sales outstanding positions: Intel Corp., fell 2,459,800 shares to 40,481,214 shares; Dell Computer Corp. fell 2,495,799 shares to 29,060,580 shares; MCI WorldCom Inc. rose 557,705 shares to 25,882,542 shares; Nextel Communications Inc. Class A fell 1,327,452 shares to 20,472,013 shares; and E*Trade Group Inc. rose 848,699 shares to 20,403,397 shares.
