The key, I think, is that in another dimension Mass can be cancelled out and then faster than light travel can be achieved. remember when Q suggested to Jordy that he needed to alter the gravitational constant of the universe? That in turn would cancel the mass of the problematic asteroid that was about to destroy a planet and then the Enterprise would have the power to alter the asteroids course. It worked, so it must be true!!
