I think the takeover theory is reasonable. Many pointed out that a takeover with Belluzo at the helm would attract lawsuits, especially if HWP were the buyer. With him out, the company is fair game.

From the standpoint of the company culture, nothing could be better than a takeover. The company needs a radically different point of view, and a takeover would facilitate that.

why would one want to buy Silicon ?
"beause it's cheap " is not the answer.

3com (in which I am
unfortunately invested) is also "dam cheap" and yet there are no buyers whereas the big guys were quick to snap up real winners like A$ND. This got beaten down by street folly but the smart money didn't get fooled by that,
hence the conclusion : $22 in late 1997, 100 bucks in early 1999.

>The realignment could make SGI a potential
>takeover target.
>After its reorganization, SGI
>will primarily be a maker of
>high-end servers. These companies
>will likely get snapped up
>by larger, full-service computer
>companies who are looking for
>niche technologies. Two of the five
>independent server makers--Sequent and
>Data General--were both recently acquired.

Again the price alone is a meaningless argument.
What can these guys do that someone else
can't ? True, O2K is around a long time, so what.
Is it any better than Sun, N4000 or V2500 ?

As a customer I would feel the jitter getting into bed
with someone on the brink.

Moreover, I have been long enough with Digital to
fully "appreciate" Belluzzo's brainware of calling
a major reorganization on day-n and getting fired
on day n+1. All deja vu.

SGI selling at a discount? No, Thank-you.
