You have to give it to men, at least some of them, and Edwarda has talked about this, I've seen "plainer" women beat out "attractive" ones because of a certain attitude on a number of occasions.

Once I think I wrote about these young girls my sister knew, a beautiful sister and a homely sister, young teenagers. She knew their mother. The beautiful one looked like the mother's first husband, whom she hated. The homely one, like the second husband, whom she loved. My sister perceived the mother's coldness toward one, and warmth toward the other, and found it distressing. Just a few years later, she met them again, and saw this: the beautiful girl was still beautiful, but depressed and unvibrant and without 'presence.' She did not feel beautiful. She was lonely. The homely one was vibrant and fun and carried herself confidently and dressed sexily and had 'style' that made up for imperfect features, and had lots of friends, and plenty of boyfriends.

Now, I guess if the loved, confident one were also beautiful the world would have been even MORE her oyster. So that story doesn't mean much, I guess. It always seemed significant to me, though.
