Eric:

One of the things most misunderstood about Zicam is that while it shortens the duration of the cold, it does not immediately take care of all the symptoms. This will vary from person to person and cold to cold but the symptoms do not leave until the cells stop becoming infected and releasing their cytokines (things that recruit inflammatory cells to the area and promote vasopermeability (congestion).

Two things are happening:
1. The viral infection and reinfection of oneself (autoinnoculation).
2. The inflammatory reaction cascade that follows it.

Zicam takes care of #1 but the inflammatory reaction does not clear up immediately until the infection of cells by virus is completely stopped. That is why one may need a night of Nyquil as well as Zicam, BUT ONE WILL NOT NEED it for very long. In other words, while you still have the infection, you will still feel crappy - but it will be gone faster and you will not feel as crappy nor for as long as you would have had you been without Zicam.

I personally DO think that Zicam has preventive effects against rhinovirus infections but it is not because it is sitting in the cabinet - LOL. It probably has more to do with mechanism of action than personal obsessive ritual or other compulsiond. We should find out by October.
