David, re: "What fundamental conditions differentiate between a simple bear and a secular bear?"

The two bear market types are "cyclical" bear, and "secular" bear. Bob also mentioned that at the start of a bear market, we won't know which type we're in. I suspect that in a secular bear, we would see trends of tighter money, rising rates, and/or high inflation that persist for years.

Re: "What fundamental conditions differentiate between a simple bear and a secular bear?"

The way I understand it, a cyclical (simple) bear market is shorter and economic conditions remain relatively intact. A secular bear market is a long, drawn-out bear where economic conditions deteriorate significantly for a number of years or more.

Best wishes,
