HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBS.MW) -- Net2Phone shares surged 10
percent Wednesday morning after the company said it's teaming up with
Sprint to test its Internet-base calling technology for long-distance phone
service to Asia.

"Sprint Callternatives,"
as the service is being
dubbed, targets the
market for calls to
Hong Kong, China,
Taiwan, Vietnam,
India, Thailand, and
Japan.

Net2Phone (NTOP:
news, msgs) will create a customer service operation, 24 hours per day,
seven days a week, to assist customer inquires in Mandarin, Cantonese
and Korean.

Net2Phone's billing technology will allow Sprint Callternatives customers
to view their telephone accounts in real time from the Net2Phone Web
site.

Shares of Net2Phone rose 5/38 to 58 1/2 while Sprint's stock gained
9/16 to 46 1/4. See IPO Daily Report.

Meanwhile, Net2Phone's parent IDT (IDTC: news, msgs) reportedly has
struck up a relationship with Madrid-based phone giant Telefonica (TEF:
news, msgs) in an alliance that may have been behind the back of MCI
Worldcom. Analysts said the 16-month-old partnership between
Telefonica and MCI Worldcom may be on the rocks, but Telefonica
officials said it's still in place.

IDT (IDTC: news, msgs) said last week it's getting a 10 percent stake in
Madrid-based Telefonica (TEF: news, msgs)'s Sam-1 cable connecting
South American, Central America and the Caribbean with the United
States. IDT shares rose 1 7/8 to 26 1/8.

It's also teaming up with Telefonica to market phone service to Latin
American consumers in the U.S. See related story.
