Here are a few things to remember about good communications, whether you're trying to communicate to your husband, sister, mother-in-law or whomever.

1. Don't respond in kind. Responding in kind is like throwing gasoline on a fire - it just makes it worse. As tempting as it may be to respond to them the same way they are treating you, remember "a gentle word turns away wrath."

2. Don't take their behavior personally. Sometimes, people aren't attacking you - they are attacking the ideas you present. Try not to get your feeling hurt when they reject your ideas, thoughts and opinions.

3. Remember, you can't change them. I recently heard a friend say, "People don't mind changing, they mind being changed." Try not to make them understand, but give them information to help them understand. (I know this is easier said than done!)

4. Try to keep your attitude positive. Find others who understand and try and gain encouragement from each other. When talking about Y2K with people you love, sometimes our sense of panic is communicated to them and that's all they hear. Because they love us too, they don't want us to be afraid - so they think that minimizing the situation is actually helping us!

5. When discussing Y2K, keep in mind that we will get through this if we work together! Being at odds with each other won't help - but don't get discouraged. Some people take a little longer to come around than others!
