YUP, the market doesnt understand that this is GREAT news for NOVL. But they will see the end results if the new replacement is a good choice. Guess its a good time to take advantage of the market's predictable reaction to this type of news.

On the Slitz departure, I don't agree

I refer you to the Wall St. analysts whose opinions I posted here about the need to introduce directory based apps pronto.

Slitz didn't resign on a whim! He didn't understand the possibilities of the internet for Novell. The proper thing to do in such circumstances is to resign if you feel you can't do that job. I'm sure Schmidt gave him the option of making the decision.

How can you be the head of marketing at a company like Novell and not understand the internet?

For engineers the comparable choice might be where your company decides to drop COBOL in favor of C++. You either learn C++ or admit that you don't want to learn C++ and leave. If you have enough money, and Slitz certainly has that, then there is no need to try to do something that you don't feel you can do best. You leave it to a person better versed in the technology required. You pat him on the back and say "good luck."

Slitz was amply rewarded for his time at Novell. He will enjoy his retirement. He made his own choice about what to do.

I think the company will require its next marketing head to thoroughly understand the internet. That is an obvious plus.

Schmidt has terrific contacts in Silicon Valley.

Novell has the products and the technology. Now it is going to get the marketing.

As a stockholder I'm satisfied. Thank our lucky stars that MSFT still doesn't have a decent directory and we have the directory apps that are about to take the internet brass ring.

Some of you will remember that when Slitz joined the company we had great hopes that marketing at Novell would change. The stock actually jumped two points in 20 minutes when word got out prematurely that he was joining. Slitz certainly achieved the acceptance of Netware 5 amongst Novell's installed base and that was a success.

The new tasks are for the next generation whose successes and failures have internet written all over them.
