Actually, I have not read a good deal of Gaugin, perhaps I will now....You were not wrong about the first point to draw from the observation, but we do, nevertheless, learn new things primarily through the use of language, and much of serious writing is involved in trying to convey things remote from common experience. How, knowing the difficulty, can this be?. I tried to suggest a way...Yes, the knowledge we get from anthropologists is suspect, because of the difficulty of finding a "comprehensive informant", someone who can put it all together and show the culture as a system, and guard against misconceptions...
