>Will it receive signals 50 miles out at sea? yes, line of sight, telephone in standby mode

This is all a function of the distance from the gateway.
The a G* phone can be up to 1500 miles away for guaranteed
delivery. Actually i was told from an engineer who worked
on the sats that he would expect the reception to exceed
1500 miles.

With groundstations in Toulouse France, Avezzano Italy,
Ogulbey Turkey (any damage??) i would assume that the
Mediterrian would be covered.

The entire Caribbean would be covered by the Texan,
Nicaraguan, Venezuelan Gndstns.

Other busy waterways such as the North sea are covered too.

Anybody know of a website showing purposed coverage?
I'm curious about Alaska.
