New Delhi, India -- In an effort to boost declining viewership, state broadcaster Doordarshan moved to digitize its 19 channels yesterday (Aug. 15).

Broadcast channels DD1 and DD2 were the first to be digitized, and they will now gain satellite distribution. Doordarshan's 17 regional-language channels are expected to be digitized by January.

Doordarshan hopes that digitizing will improve the transmission quality of the channels, which hasn't been as good as that of private competitors, said Rajiv Ratna Shah, acting CEO of Prasar Bharati Corp., the state agency that oversees Doordarshan.
