Dr, apparently you haven't conducted much dd on the company. Your post is highly speculative. I don't have time to do the work for you so I suggest that you read all of the posts on Raging Bull and SI and pay particular attention to the posts by GaBard. In addition I suggest you contact the company and ask your questions and post your findings on the board as many of us have done. You see, posting a speculative opinion on a board without properly conducting dd is just an opinion. Feel free to dig up some facts and share them with us. Befor this I wrote THIS on August - 24 and saved it Yesterday:

Nixon saying all his communications were to BE stonewalled during Watergate investigations. Why is/does a response management that goes to such lenghts by faxing DTC data and question on one thing and doing another seems like a defination of Stonewalling.

NANOGLASS SHOWS PROMISE
As IC line widths shrink, better insulating materials to reduce cross talk within a device become critical. For this reason SEMATECH is looking at alternatives to silicon dioxide, with its dielectric constant (k) of around 4.0. The International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors calls for the implementation of k < 2.5 materials by 2001 and k < 2.0 (ultra low-k) materials by 2003. Work at SEMATECH is beginning to narrow the field of candidates.
Finding ultra-low dielectric constant materials with the strength and thermal stability to withstand IC fabrication remains the challenge for SEMATECH's Low-k Dielectrics Group. "For most materials, the only way to drive the dielectric constant below 2.0 is to add air," said Todd Ryan, AMD assignee and project leader. Air can be added by lowering the density and adding pores to a material, but those changes create a lot of problems including reduced strength, which affects the ability to polish the wafer without destroying the structures on its surface.
One material emerging as a possible oxide replacement is Allied Signal's Nanoglass (TM). The ultra low-k materials under evaluation at SEMATECH generally fall into four categories: non-porous, templated-composite materials, inorganic/organic hybrids and the sol-gels, which include Nanoglass.
Nanoglass is basically an oxide-like film with pores throughout, deposited by spin-coating. "This film has been studied for some time now, and it's fairly well-understood how to make it uniform," said Ryan. "There's a lot of learning to be done with ultra low-k, which is why we're starting now," he said. Ryan estimates that an ultra low-k commercial product is at least two years off. "We're looking at many properties, including mechanical strength, thermal stability, and dielectric constant."
Because porous materials, with a 2.2 dielectric constant can be 75 percent porous, they are "so weak mechanically that during the polishing process, you can rip everything off the wafer," said Ryan. However, when the metal trenches formed in Nanoglass K2.2-A10B are lined with a standard oxide liner, the structures are strengthened enough for chemical mechanical polish (CMP) to be successful.
"We learned that if you make the Nanoglass K2.2-A10B itself stronger, it will facilitate CMP. The trick is to do this without increasing the dielectric constant," he said. In one test of the viability of Nanoglass K2.2-A10B, Ryan added an oxide layer to the wafer. "The additional strength of this oxide layer allows us to successfully polish the wafer."
Nanoglass is one of several potential ultra low-k materials now being explored. However, the implementation of ultra low-k materials is several years away.
"The conversion to low-k materials in general, in place of oxide, will be incremental," said Ryan. The first step may entail adding fluorine to the existing CVD oxide, forming fluorosilicate glass (FSG) and resulting in a dielectric constant between 3.3 and 3.8.
Although the industry is only beginning to implement low-k materials with dielectric constants less than 4.0, Ryan is already moving ahead into ultra low-k materials. That effort includes the active participation of suppliers, encouraging their development of ultra low-k materials now rather than later. The list of suppliers has doubled in the past year. "The feedback we give to suppliers helps them know how to improve their materials," said Ryan.
While studying the characteristics of different insulator materials, no clear winner has yet emerged among the materials under consideration. "The whole point is to do some basic screening studies. From that information, member companies can then do their own internal work to develop promising materials. Our mission is to benchmark different materials," said Ryan. "And SEMATECH is leading the way in benchmarking these materials."
