TELIA: Telecom operator in broadband investment
By Nicholas George in Stockholm

Telia, the state owned Swedish telecom operator, will next year invest SKr1.4bn ($168m) in extending the country's broadband network to connect 1m households in the next two years.
Earlier this week the private company Bredbandsbolaget announced that it also hopes to have 1m households connected. Broadband networks allow cheap 24-hour access to the internet at up to 200 times the speed of existing telephone networks. Telia, which is to be partially privatised following the completion of its merger with its Norwegian counterpart Telenor, said pre-tax profit fell by 26 per cent to SKr2.87bn on sales which rose 8.5 per cent to SKr26.6bn
