ScanDisk ... thorough mode

I test in thorough mode only about once a year. As yet, I've never uncovered a problem on a hard drive, but had a few floppy disk failures. Soft errors, or the kind of stuff discovered with the quick check, visit repeatedly as sometimes a piece of cow-lick code decides to hop the fence and cause mischief. I prefer to choose my own option settings so ScanDisk does something sensible when problems appear.

I'm just lucky! I've never had a hard disk fail, or a factory-level format go stale. (I hope the disk-error gods don't follow this thread!) Again, prevention is the key: catch small errors and make backups regularly.

I agree. Standard mode will check for cross-linked files, incorrectly mapped sectors and other small disk errors. The thorough does the same but adds a complete physical disk check. Although bad sectors are not as common as they used to be, I still recommend running a thorough check of your drive every month. Especially if disk errors are becoming more frequent.

hey wily,

here's the way i heard the difference between normal test and thorough test described... in a norton piece.

a 'normal' surface test scans the disks selected for file allocation table errors, cross-linked files, and lost clusters. it does not run potentially time-consuming scans on the disk surface, the boot sector, or the partition table.

norton allows users to choose what to test also, either the entire disk area or just the area used by files.
