In Taiwan, computer memory chipmakers such as Winbond
Electronics Corp. also jumped. Mosel Vitelic Inc. rose 4.5
percent to NT$27.80. Macronix International Corp., which makes
flash memory chips for Nintendo Co., rose 3.6 percent to
NT$37.40.
''The pace that memory chip prices have risen surprised many
investors. Now, the chips are widely expected to jump to $10 by
December, further boosting stocks like Winbond Electronics Corp.
and Mosel Vitelic Inc,'' said Oliver Lee, a portfolio manager of
AIG Securities Investment Trust Co. with NT$10 billion ($314
million) in client assets. ''Overall, the semiconductor industry
is doing very well. We don't see any clouds through 2000.

The standard dynamic random access memory chips were sold at
$8.33 yesterday, hovering at their five-month highs for a second
day.
