I think the phenomenon is better compared to Asch's experiments (S.E. Ashc, in Group Dynamics 2d ed., edited by Cartwright and Zander, Harper & Row, New York., where groups of people conspired tp convince "the subject" that some lines were longer than others. The ability to scare off minority views even when they are demonstrably correct is known from many studies. There are many threads so dominated by a particular clique that there is little useful exchange. At the same time, it is often hard to respect the outspoken single freedom fighter (LT on Dell, or what's his name on Cisco) who often seems even more bizarre.
