Vodafone rolls out email-by-phone
Why talk on a mobile when you can use it to write clever notes?
Mobile phone operator Vodafone (LSE: VOD.L - news) has announced a service that allows users to send and receive email from any Vodafone digital phone, with no need for an additional modem. Emails are sent and received as SMS text messages.

The service, BulletIN, will accept messages of up to 160 characters, with longer emails appearing as separate SMS messages. Email can also be diverted to a fax machine for printouts.

The service is free once registered, the only costs involved being the cost of sending SMS messages -- the standard cost of receiving an email is 20p.

Vodafone's move follows on the rising popularity of SMS messaging and the increasing use of mobile telephones in the UK.
