Cabletron Systems Selected for EarthLink's Production Network

Smart Network Solution Supports More Than 1.3 Million EarthLink Members

ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 27, 1999--Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS - news) today announced that EarthLink (NASDAQ:ELNK - news), one of the world's leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs), has selected Cabletron Systems as the company's standard for Gigabit Ethernet network switching, providing high-speed Internet services for business and residential clients.

''Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router provides reliable, scalable, application-aware routing for the LAN and WAN,'' said Romulus Pereira, chief operating officer at Cabletron Systems. ''Leading ISPs like EarthLink are able to grow their member base and deploy new service offerings, without compromising performance and security.''

EarthLink selected the Cabletron solution after extensively testing products from seven different Gigabit Ethernet vendors. The solution includes Cabletron's award-winning SmartSwitch Router (SSR) 8000/8600, SmartSwitch 9000 and SPECTRUM Enterprise Manager.

EarthLink recently upgraded Cabletron MMAC+ FDDI hubs to new SSR Gigabit Ethernet switches which provide increased carrying capacity for core services such as email, USENet News, the EarthLink Personal Start Page, and a variety of Web services, including EarthLink's domain farm and e-commerce solutions. In addition, the switches help support 350,000 free 6 MB Web sites, available to all EarthLink members as part of the standard service.

''Cabletron had the best products, at the right price and the right form factor for us, and they are very responsive to our service needs,'' said Steve Dougherty, director of technology acquisition at EarthLink. ''We will continue to work with Cabletron as EarthLink grows from more than 1.3 million members to supporting millions more in the future.''
