This is so very confused, I can;t even begin to write down what is right...UMTS standard for 3G...What?

And on SMS versus instant messages. You are all confusing a service with a distribution channel. any of these systems can offer text messaging, it is just HOW they offer it. the true term that is used by the systems engineers for SMS (short message service) is the one which does NOT use a traffic channel. It is about the delivery of the text, not the service of the text. thikn of it like differnt hoses running into your ouse. All are delivering water, but what you do wiht the water is your business.

SMS in CDMA pays a price. In SMS out to the phone, you share the left over bits with the telephone numbers sent out over the air to indicate a cal is waiting. On return link SMS, in which the mobile sends text BACK to the basestation, you are competing wiht all the other mobiles on a random backoff access channel which can have some real queue loading effects. To think of this one, imagine that there are 10 kids with hoses trying all to squirt them thru a single funnel which can only handle at most two of them. If 3 hit it, then it fills up and all water flows over the sides. Again, what you do with the water that makes it thru the funnel is up to you.

SMS was sopecified in GSM long before they actually built a system and the specificaiton called for it as a mandate, so even if it makes the system less efficient, they still have to include it. What they are doing is to find ways to make the overhead data work better in GSM to make the SMs service better.
