A lot depends on what is being written. But I think there have been few first drafts in the history of the craft that would not have benefited from a good cut-and-slash session.

One thing I've learned: when something doesn't work, and you can't figure out what it is, it is probably some bit that you really like. Find it and kill it. Sacrificing the whole for the sake of a part is folly.
