Bloomberg is reporting that Cisco also considered buying Tellabs but got Cerant at half the price for the same technology. Says market has figured that out as Cisco is up and Tellabs is off.

Reports analysts are saying Cisco got a good price considering the technology and recent market action.

''This will allow Cisco to penetrate more deeply what has been a traditional stronghold of Old World players (like Lucent), and that helps to explain why they're paying so much for it,'' said analyst Michael Cristinziano at Gerard Klauer Mattison & Co. in New York....

...Such moves are rapidly expanding the size of the market Cisco is addressing. According to Cristinziano, in 1998 it was addressing a market worth $20 billion and had about 50 percent of it. But by 2002, because Cisco is aggressively moving into new markets, Cisco's market opportunity will be $140 billion...

Where is Ciscos mantra of not making large acquisitions since according to Mr. Chambers 50% of them dont work out blah blah blah (the usual crap he doled out when competitors made acquisitions that were stinging them) ?
Oh, its out of the window today since there is a gun called LUCENT on his head nowadays.
He is a smooth salesman and Cisco is what Cisco is because of him. 3Com needs to learn a lot from him.
