Not to beat it to death but I have confrimed with a broker/CA that I know that it is indeed taxable as it is a gain - at some point the broker realeases the money to you for the sell and frees up ypour money you had to use to sell the short

It would cost you $20k to short 100k of ETN at .40 in a 50% margin acct. That $20k is still tied up for the year or whatever the exact period is - Remember the brokerage house has collected $40k on the sale - at some point they will relaes that $40 k to you for a $20k gain which is taxable.

I asked PAV as I asked him the other day what was the hold period and he told me it was a year - he might know the answer
