The confusion about XTO earnings is probably because all the 2Q earnings came from sale of Hugoton Royalty Trust units.

I think Zacks excludes it as a non-recurring gain while other earnings services may include it. I like XTO but I have a problem evaluating companies that sell off the future royalty streams of some of their producing properties thru royalty trusts. Hard to tell whether they are making good deals for the shareholder.
Question for 3Q earnings is whether they will sell additional royalty units and book another big gain. If not, earnings from operations only will probably not approach 2Q, even with higher prices.
