Kiefer Sutherland is in advanced talks to star in and direct "Among the Thugs," written by Alexander Stuart, for Emmett/Furla Films. "Thugs," based on Bill Buford's bestselling nonfiction book, has been in active development at Emmett/Furla. "Thugs" tells the true story of Buford, an American journalist who, while covering British soccer fans, falls in love with a female visa agent. Pic will be produced by partners Randall Emmett and George Furla along with Simon Halfon. Susan Bymel and Evelyn O'Neill and First Miracle's Tony Cataldo will exec produce. Also in pre-production through Emmett/Furla is the Lee Stanley script "Held for Ransom," a teen thriller set in the Florida Everglades and based on the Lois Duncan novel of the same name. Emmett/Furla arranged financing for "Ransom" through Cutting Edge and First Miracle Group, with which they have a first-look deal. Emmett/Furla plans to produce four to six pics per year.
