Heinz, thanks that is quite a site. I am downloading the data right now, DJIA 1980 - 1999. I will have to see whether I can isolate the daily 1/87 - 11/87.

they were bent on stopping the speculation, which exacerbated the depression because there was no liquidity.

today i think the margin problems are much worse. when things go badly, they could get really bad very quickly. the fed as some leeway in flooding the market with cash as they did last year ( very few realize just how close we came to bank failures). however, if we lose enough... if it becomes a real malaise, spending will stop and the whole thing will take maybe a year to work out.
