A tad harsh...LOL!... You are probably right that Socrates was more like he was portrayed by Xenophon, shrewd and mainly interested in conduct. Diogenes Laertius says that the Socratic Dialogue became a distinct literary form, and that various schools, including the Stoics and Cynics, claimed inspiration from Socrates. He even says that Aristotle wrote many Socratic dialogues, and was considered quite accomplished. Presumably, they went up in smoke with the Alexandrine Library....
