DJ Tellabs Dn 9%; Co. Cites Cisco's Acquisition Of Cerent

By Maria V. Georgianis

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Tellabs Inc. (TLAB) shares fell nearly 11% on the perception that it
would be hurt by Cisco Systems Inc.'s (CSCO) planned acquisition of telecom-equipment company
Cerent Corp., a Tellabs spokesman said.

Cerent is "not a major competitor" said Tom Scottino, director of investor relations for Tellabs.

"We're going to see these guys in the market for sure," Scottino said, but he noted that Cerent
competes more with companies such as Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) and Nortel Networks Corp.
(NT).

Earlier Thursday, Cisco said it planned to acquire Cerent and Monterey Networks, a networking
technology company, for about $6.9 billion in stock.

In recent trading, Tellabs was down 5 13/16, or 8.6%, at 61 15/15, on volume of 11.2 million shares
compared to average daily share volume of 3.57 million.
