Dear Fisherman Hodgson,
Please do not transfer your own habits on people
on this thread. I understand the Alaska is a cold
land and you must drink a lot of 200-proof beverages
performing your job duties, but it does not
excuse you from making "delusional" statements.
I am exceedingly sorry that the small company
AMD is making so many worries to your hard
earned investments. Please get another drink
and relax - Intel is not going out of business
tomorrow.

Gordon, the <GGG> means a tongue in cheek post. I expect that AMD will get some share and Intel will not be as eager to cut the high end stuff to $50 to deny AMD a profit as it will do too much harm to Intel. As long as Intel could leave the scraps to the AMD dogs and preserve profits at the high end with P-III and xeon they were immune to the price war. The price war took place in a segment Intel was departing from, like 286, 386, 486, P, P-II and was acceptable and subsidized by the high end server and quicker product.
From the looks of things there will be a 1 year window where this will not work as well. WIll Intel burn even the high end profits to make sure AMD makes nothing from the Athlon? They might just do it, kill the root and the tree never is bigenough to overshadow Intel. They may decide to go for a commodity war at all levels from xeon down. we may see Athlons and xeons for under $100.
Who can endure such a pissing contest the best?. Intel of course anmd will that enable Intel ti kill AMD?....no. IBM and Compaq will direct business to AMD. They know that this war must not be allowed to end with an Intel winning...why? they like the prices in th e war and they know what will happen if AMD dies.
$2000 P-III, $3000 Xeons.
Intel knows this and will probably choose to live with AMD getting some share as long as they are matched on a broad front.
If however AMD gets a MHZ lead and keeps it, then the leadership mantle will fall on AMD, for as long as they can keep it, and with it the accolades and profits too.
