From the Rutherford Institute--- Notable Cases Institute attorneys fight for the constitutional and human rights of men, women and children who are discriminated against or persecuted for their beliefs. Operating under John Whitehead's philosophy that "liberties are all interdependent; we are not free anywhere if someone in the world is still persecuted, oppressed or enslaved," the Institute continues to monitor and respond to those in need of assistance, nationally and internationally. The following are a sampling of cases The Rutherford Institute (TRI) has handled or is currently handling: Weinstein v. Arpaio, Maricopa County Sheriff: Weinstein, a Jewish inmate, was denied kosher meals. Some claims voluntarily dismissed, lawsuit in discovery stage. Decyk v. Delaware River and Bay Authority: Client was subjected to verbal assault, harassment and false accusations of theft and dishonesty which ultimately resulted in suspension when his supervisor discovered he is gay. Litigation is ongoing. Sternberg et al. v. Fletcher, et al.: The clients' civil rights were violated when zoning ordinances were enacted to exclude Orthodox Jews from worshiping in residential areas. Court granted relief and permanent injunction against the village. Watts v. Howe Public School: Four special education students were forced into a shower and smeared with feces from diapers as part of a lesson on slave ships. Litigation is on-going. Doe v. East Stroudsberg School District, et al.: Pennsylvania school district forced more than 50 sixth-grade girls to undergo gynecological exams without informed parental consent and against the girls' wishes. Litigation is ongoing. Montalvo v. Radcliffe: Luciano Montalvo's 14-year-old son was not allowed to enroll in a karate class because he was HIV positive. TRI attorneys are working on the appeal.
