Actually, we do functionally live in a democracy now.

The republic was mortally wounded when General Lee surrendered. President Taft cut its throat, FDR dismembered it, and every president since has slowly burned its body. Yes, even Reagan.

A social democracy is a coalition of states, working for a common good. And each state is a part of the common government.

A republic is a coalition of states, banded together for mutual defense. But each is independently soveriegn.

Most American's can't tell the difference between the two definitions, but it comes down to one question.

Who sets most of the policy in a State, the State government, or the federal government?

We live in a social democracy now, by the functioning of the goverment, if not in word.
