regarding "People pay (and will continue to pay) for fast access. I pay $39 a month for cable modem access and would pay $100/mo--it's that much better for the frequent home/home business user." I am not disagreeing with this....the point is not everyone will use fee based cable...you need to go after all the customers not some.

Techguy, you write "People pay (and will continue to pay) for fast access. I pay $39 a month for cable modem access and would pay $100/mo--it's that much better for the frequent home/home business user". I don't think there is anything wrong with this; there will always be services for those who wish to pay. Generally, the more you pay the more you get.

The point here is: that does not represent mass market. The critical mass is happy with 56k connections costing $20/month. SI is not exactly a good place to take this pulse since by definition we want more out of the net. Geez, we actually pay to be able to post our thoughts here.

I don't think there will be a shift in this pattern because Net access is a separate service (read bill). Mass market faster access will have to come for an equivalent price or come bundled with something else so that it is harder to distinguish. I think that the people behind DSL and cable either know this or will come to realize it. They are welcomed to test the waters, but market forces will eventually make it clear what the critical mass wants and is willing to pay for.
