Konka/C-Cube DVD player................... e-town.com KONKA DOES DVD, TOO August 25, 1999 -- Konka, an upstart Chinese manufacturer of low-cost CE gear, announced that it will sell a $199 DVD player here in late October. In our view, this will force other manufacturers to lower their prices -- a great early Christmas gift for anyone thinking of buying a DVD player later this year. At a list price of $199, $179 and $159 store prices can't be too far behind. Could there be a $129 Thanksgiving blowout at Wal-Mart? Just think: Three years ago, the cheapest DVD players cost $500. No wonder we love the consumer electronics industry! Progressive scan output? Ha! The $199 KD1800U is a bare-bones DVD player with a silver exterior. This deck does essentially what any DVD player will do, but it does so cheaply. The Konka player supports up to eight different languages for soundtracks and as many as 32 languages for subtitles. It is compatible with audio CDs, Video CDs and standard DVDs. It also has multiscreen aspect ratios (4:3 and 16:9), random access track selection capabilities and DVD chapter, title and time capabilities. The KD1800U has two on-screen display languages (English and Chinese), an LCD, a digital comb filter and a remote control. This model has digital audio output modes, multispeed playback functions and A/V, S-video and composite video outputs.
