One more piece of new info about this news at the end : "Sprint Teams With 3Com On Net Phone Services" Aug 26, 1999 (Tech Web - CMP via COMTEX) -- 3Com and Sprint PCS Tuesday announced they are working together on Sprint PCS's recently announced Wireless Web service, which brings Internet access to a user's mobile handset. Sprint said it expects the service to be available by the end of September. Sprint PCS has been installing the vendor's equipment, with Santa Clara, Calif.-based 3Com's assistance, since early this year, company executives said. The equipment acts as a gateway between wireless CDMA networks and wireline networks that connect to intranet and Internet data. 3Com's equipment, called CDMA InterWorking Function (IWF), was developed with technology from the company's existing Total Control product line. IWF will blend voice and data on a smart phone, said Ben Cardwell, director of wireless product management at 3Com's wireless carrier systems group. "Users can handle voice and data functions in one device without complicated features," Cardwell said. Keith Paglusch, senior vice president of operations at Sprint PCS, said the deal with 3Com enhances offerings from Sprint PCS Wireless Web -- where the mobile phones have a microbrowser funcationality. Sprint PCS users can customize information on a Yahoo Web page and have information such as stock quotes, weather reports, or horoscopes sent to their mobile phone. Wireless Web Connection, another product offering from Sprint PCS, will let users tap into their PCs and reach information from a corporate intranet. Users must purchase a kit that includes a hook-in cable that connects to the computer. Monthly pricing plans for the wireless data service, which provide speeds of 14.4 kilobits per second, include: $9.99 fee for 50 data minutes, $59.99 for 300 minutes of anytime/anywhere access with 100 data Yahoo site updates, $89.99 for 500 voice and data minutes, $129.99 for800 voice and data minutes plus 200 updates, and $179.99 for 1,200 voice and data minutes. The cable connector for PC access costs $99. Other CDMA-based wireless service providers, namely AirTouch Communications and GTE Wireless, have also recently announced wireless Internet offerings that let users access information via a microbrowser on a mobile phone. GTE Wireless executives said 3Com equipment will be used in their offering as well, which is scheduled to launch this fall. Paglusch said the Sprint PCS offering will differ from competitors in its breadth of coverage. "By using the 3Com technology in all of our switch sites, Sprint PCS will have the largest footprint possible," he said. "What we are doing is not a test. It is for real and will be available in all of our markets, not just a few cities."
