PEGASO Enters Second Mexican Market in its Path to National Coverage
SAN DIEGO and GUADALAJARA, Mexico, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Wireless communications carrier Leap Wireless International, Inc. (Nasdaq: LWIN - news) today announced that its Mexican operating company, PEGASO PCS, will begin launching all-digital commercial wireless service in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Guadalajara marks the second market in PEGASO's rollout of a 100 percent CDMA digital wireless network. The launch ceremony will be attended by Alberto Cardenas Jimenez, Governor of Jalisco, who will make the ceremonial first call on Guadalajara's network using a PEGASO phone. PEGASO expects to have more than 200 points of distribution in Guadalajara including stores such as: Soriana, 7-Eleven, Office Depot, Office Max, Videocentro, Fabricas de Francia, Godea Aurreara, Farmacias Benavides, and Oxxo.
''PEGASO's launch in Guadalajara reaffirms our goal to increase teledensity in underserved markets, and it firmly establishes PEGASO's position as a serious player in the Mexican wireless arena,'' said Harvey P. White, Leap's chairman and CEO. ''By building Mexico's first 100 percent digital wireless network, PEGASO clearly is demonstrating its momentum and commitment to providing Mexican consumers with superior wireless service.''
PEGASO has been offering service in Mexico since February 1999 when it launched its all-digital wireless service in Tijuana. Committed to setting new standards of quality and excellence for wireless services in Mexico, the company offers mass distribution of pre-activated telephones through self- service stores and supermarkets. PEGASO also offers customers a ''Fair Payment Per Second,'' billing service. The first of its kind in the Mexican market, the service charges users only for the airtime they actually use, resulting in a more affordable wireless service for users. PEGASO expects to launch service in Monterrey and Mexico City by the end of 1999. These launches will complete PEGASO's buildout in the country's four largest economic centers.
