Bob : There will always be objections (as with the DJIA)--- too much of this, too little of that, too heavily weighted in favor of expensive shares, changes based on price differences and not on percentages etc. Looks, to me, like making an index is a labor of unrequited love. I feel the various indices tell a very similar story: eg TSE is very similar in form to XAU. Although the absolute price changes may not be identical I am sure they are close enough. chart.canada-stockwatch.com iqc.com SAf gold index has been screwed up because of the changes in the industry so it will take years before it means anything. Even Anglogold is not what is was --- VaalReefs. What I am trying to say is that if an investor/trader can read one index well, he can read all. Accordingly I don't think it is necessary to re-invent the wheel just because one maintains that one's new wheel is more round than someone else's.
