GMST patent news: PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 27, 1999--Gemstar International Group Limited (Nasdaq:GMST - news) Friday announced that it received a key patent covering the concept of displaying advertisements in electronic program guides (''EPGs''). U.S. Patent 5,940,073 describes and claims an interactive television schedule guide having interactive areas (''Information Panels'') for advertising and promoting programs, products or services that are simultaneously displayed with the television listings. The Information Panels may display text, graphics or motion video, and may offer additional information or actions that can be accessed independent of the television program listings. Among the actions available in the Information Region is a link to the Internet to obtain additional information or to permit response, inquiry or transaction pertaining to the program, product or services being described.
