Cisco is "going to be able now to put together a service provider offering that, really, Lucent and Nortel cannot match," said Elias Moosa of Thomas Weisel Partners, who raised his stock rating on the world's largest computer networking company to a "strong buy" from "buy" after the deals were announced..
With that being the case, its begs the question: Why didn't Lucent or Nortel bid for Cerent? ""I don't think they would have the guts to pay this kind of premium," Moosa asserted
GUTS???????
lets look at the parts they might need not already have.
Excel, which was founded in 1988 and employs about 460 people, targets its switches at new telecom service providers and established providers entering new markets. It had $123.3 million in revenues and $21 million in net income in 1998
Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent said it will buy Xedia for about 3.86 million shares of Lucent common stock or about $246 million. The deal is expected to close in the fiscal quarter ending Dec. 31. The deal will not affect Lucent's earnings in fiscal 2000
NEW YORK, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Telecommunications equipment maker Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=lu&d=t> - news </n/l/lu.html>) said on Tuesday it would buy communications consulting firm International Network Services for $3.7 billion in a move to strengthen its efforts in helping customers blend voice and data networks.
Global Crossing will be first to test
MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 14, 1999-- Using beams of light to transmit information directly through the air, a breakthrough optical networking system from Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=lu&d=t> - news </n/l/lu.html>) will dramatically boost the capacity of local data networks and extend the reach of today's high-capacity fiber-optic systems
``This high-capacity technology will give Lucent another optical solution to complement our fiber-based systems and our broadband-wireless-access offerings,' said Butters. ``We set out to bring the power of photons to network environments where deploying fiber is just not practical. And WaveStar OpticAir fits that niche.'

Oh and lets not forget that little company Nexabit networks........ looking at JNPRs mkt cap and discounting that some and adding all the M&A costs including the 24 Billion ASND deal maybe LU doesnt need any more guts Mr. Moosa.
